HOW I MAKE A POSTER
01 ➵ FIND THE STARTING POINT I begin with a track, an image, a conversation, or a feeling or anything else that’s worth turning into a visual story.02 ➵ EXPLORE THE IDEA I gather references, write down and sketch associations, and decide what I want the poster to communicate and feel like.03 ➵ SKETCH DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS I test rough compositions, combining typography, images, and shapes. At this stage, I focus on possibilities rather than details, and have no fear making several versions and remakes. Remaking is the key way to make poster be more bold, sustainable and accurate.04 ➵ BUILD THE VISUAL LANGUAGE I choose the typefaces, colors, and textures that support the idea, then develop the strongest direction. While developing the visual, I use several programs and mix up many various techniques together.05 ➵ REFINE AND TEST I adjust the hierarchy, spacing, and contrast. I check the poster at different sizes to see what catches the eye and what stays readable.06 ➵ PREPARE AND SHARE I check the final file and export it for print or digital use.
