01 / ABOUT ME

post

HELLO, NICE TO MEET YOU!My name is Valeria Kozlova. I am an interior and spatial designer, currently in my fourth year at the HSE Art and Design School in Saint Petersburg. My primary interests lie in the design of public and commercial spaces, as well as furniture and object design. In my projects, I aim to go beyond purely functional and aesthetic solutions. I am interested in creating spaces with character, a story of their own, and an emotional dimension.Working with cultural context plays a particularly important role in my practice. Historic architecture, traditions, familiar childhood objects, and visual references from the past often become the starting points for my projects.I believe that contemporary design does not have to reject the past. On the contrary, looking back can lead to unexpected solutions and create new meanings.WHAT I DO01 / INTERIOR DESIGN

02 / MY APPROACH

PRESERVE THE MEANING → TRANSFORM THE FORM

The past is all around us.It exists in the architecture of old buildings, everyday objects, cultural traditions, and memories.Over time, technologies, materials, and our understanding of comfort change, yet many images and symbols remain instantly recognizable.I am fascinated by the moment when something familiar takes on a new meaning. How can a historic interior become a contemporary public space? Can the packaging of a familiar childhood product become a piece of furniture? How can an industrial building retain its identity while taking on an entirely new function? These questions form the foundation of my design approach.I do not seek to reproduce the past literally. Instead, I aim to explore its defining characteristics, identify what matters most, and translate those meanings into the language of contemporary design.

NEW FORMS OF THE PAST is a selection of projects united by the idea of reinterpretation

Each project offers its own answer to one question:WHAT COULD THE PAST LOOK LIKE TODAY?

KLUBOK. Russian Cuisine Restaurant

post

Traditional Russian hospitality reimagined in a contemporary interior. What makes a space truly welcoming? For me, the answer lies not only in comfortable furniture or pleasant lighting, but also in the atmosphere that makes people feel genuinely welcome. The concept of Klubok is based on a reinterpretation of traditional Russian hospitality. The starting point was the idea of home — a place where loved ones gather, share stories, and spend time together.Instead of creating a conventional restaurant interior, I proposed a space resembling a large apartment, where each room has its own distinct character.Russian decorative traditions, familiar patterns, and cultural imagery become part of a contemporary interior environment. The goal was not to recreate a historic Russian interior literally, but to design a new space that preserves the warmth of home and a recognizable cultural identity.VIEW FULL PROJECT

LUMIBOO. Interior Object Collection

post

From a child’s drawing to a design object. As children, we perceive the world differently. Simple shapes become characters, random lines turn into images, and ordinary objects take on personalities of their own.LUMIBOO explores this spontaneous way of seeing the world. The inspiration came from children’s drawings of animals — naive, expressive, and unrestricted by conventional rules of representation. I wanted to preserve their emotional quality while translating them into contemporary object design. Throughout the design process, recognizable silhouettes were reinterpreted through sculptural form, proportions, and materiality. As a result, these childhood images became decorative interior objects capable of existing in an entirely different context.LUMIBOO is an attempt to preserve a sense of childhood spontaneity within an adult environment.VIEW FULL PROJECT

Sometimes, creating something new means remembering how we saw the world as children.

Familiar images on an unexpected scale. Some objects remain in our memory not because of their function, but because of their appearance. The colors, shapes, and graphics of familiar packaging can instantly evoke associations with a particular time. The furniture collection A Taste of Childhood is inspired by the visual culture of Soviet-era food packaging. The starting point was a selection of recognizable products familiar to several generations. I wanted to explore how strongly shape and color are connected to our memories. Can we still recognize an object when its name and original function are removed?During the design process, I identified the most distinctive graphic elements of the packaging and translated them into three-dimensional furniture pieces. This exploration resulted in the Soda Wardrobe, Butter Cabinet, Condensed Milk Pouf, and Milk Armchair. Each piece maintains a visual connection to its original reference while taking on an entirely new purpose. The collection explores nostalgia without directly copying the past, transforming familiar everyday imagery into contemporary design objects.VIEW FULL PROJECT
