Communication as a process of creating meaning rather than transmitting information

Communication is determined not only as message exchange but as a process of creating and meaning making. It is a core principle for design and modern art where message rarely has one fixated meaning.

Communicational design, 3D assets and even interior design function as symbolic systems. Form, colour, material and size are coded signs of author that viewer decodes. Decode result always depends on the context — cultural, social and personal experience of an audience.

Original size 800x800

In the field of CGI it is also true: the same 3D asset can be used by different people for different projects. It is essential for it to fit projects style.

Thus communication theory lets people to view design not only as an «object» but as a process of interpretation in which meaning is constantly reassembled.

Theory as a «Lens»: Different Approaches to Understanding Visual Communication

Theory is a lens through which we view communication. There is no «right» or «wrong» theory: each illuminates different aspect of the process.

Original size 1163x734

This is especially noticeable in design and contemporary art: Objective approach views communication as a structured process with measurable parameters. In 3D it includes topology, polygon count and other technical constraints.

Interpretive approach is focused on subjective meanings, experiences and context. Here 3D asset is not only a model, but rather a carrier of history, cultural codes, and authors own statements.

Usage of different theoretic lenses lets designers and artists switch between tecnical and semantic logic.

Context, encoding and decoding in visual culture

One of essentials is encoding / decoding model in which sender codes message and receiver interprets it in his own context. Communication is never neutral: meaning always depends on circumstances.

Cultural context expresses how exactly forms and styles are read. For example, in contemporary art sharp shapes show danger and aggression, while rounded shapes show safety and comfort. The same asset in japanese cultural context can be read as an asset with an anime aesthetic although in western it would be read as a stylized character. Designer works not with an object but rather with a sistem of cultural codes.

Original size 2500x1893

Professional context answers questions: who is looking and why? The audience is always active, people don’t «see» an object, they interpret it based on their experience. This is especially important in visual design. For example, for a game designer, an asset is a gameplay element, for an artist it’s an artistic statement, for a tech artist it’s a set of technical constraints and for the average user it’s part of the visual experience. The same object may appear unoptimized to a professional and detailed and beautiful to the average user. An assets meaning changes depending on professional context of perception.

Context plays a crucial role in contemporary visual design as it determines the meaning of a visual message. Form, style, and material do not possess fixed meaning in themselves — they acquire meaning only through interaction with cultural, professional, and media environments of perception.

Communication as interaction, experience and social practice

Communication is not a one time act, but a dynamic process of interaction. Contemporary design and digital art are more and more focused not on looking, but on experience. An app user interacts with a UI interface, a gamer with a game world, and a viewer with an interactive installation.

Original size 1920x1080

In this context, visual communication becomes a social practice: it forms ways of interaction, assign roles and even has an influence on users creative identity.

Original size 980x980

Using communication theory as an analytical tool, design and contemporary art can be viewed as meaning making processes implemented in context, culture, and interaction. This understanding becomes the foundation for the design of digital products and brands operating at the intersection of technology and creativity.

Presentation for broad audience

3D NEURO-MARKET is an online asset marketplace for 3D artists and developers. There all models are created by humans, but we have built-in AI networks that easily adjust assets to ensure the buyer gets exactly what they need and search for. The key idea is not to replace human work, but to personalize the process.

Why is this convenient for the average user? You find a model, select the level of details and receive a version already adapted for your project, which is great for saving time. Service takes the task into account and offers simple customization options.

Here’s how it works in three steps. You select an asset, then specify the task and parameters, after which the AI makes careful modifications and you receive the asset. This cycle of production ensures both speed and quality control.

Creative safety and copyright. Assets are still created by humans — AI networks merely augment them. We transparently mark which changes were made automatically and provide the ability to approve change.

Presentation for professional audience

3D NEURO-MARKET is a marketplace with an unusual pipeline. The neural network performs controlled, highly targeted transformations: retopology, texture adaptation, and stylization, reducing asset time-to-market (TTM) and content integration costs.

Benefits for asset creators. Authors are paid for original assets and receive a commission for each automated edit. Platform helps to reduce the need for repetitive edits and increases monetization through mass customization. This makes the offer attractive to professionals as increasing sales are combined with reduced effort.

At 3D NEURO-MARKET increased traffic and repeated orders are directly linked to the communication between the platform and the user. The ability to customize an asset for a specific task reduces the gap between customer expectations and the final result. In terms of KPIs, this communication model leads to measurable results: increased time spent on the platform, increased return retention, higher conversion rates from viewing to purchase, and an increase in the average order value due to customization.

How the communication theory presented in the course served as the basis for creating these presentations

Communication theory shifts focus from simply transmitting information to creating meaning; therefore, presentations were built not around features, but around the meaning the platform provides to different users.

The encoding/decoding model formed the base of the platforms concept as a transmitter: the author encodes meaning into an asset, the user decodes it in their project and the neural network helps coordinate the encoding and decoding.

The cybernetic principle was used in the pipeline design: processing stages, quality reports, and human-in-the-loop minimize «noise» and allow for quick adjustments to the result.

At last, ideas about context and social nature of communication justified the separation of messages for general and professional audiences and prompted the creation of a transparent interface. It is clear who the author is, what changes the AI has made and how to roll back edits.
